Tea with Rev Barry ~ Episode 1 ~ The Answer Is Within You

Tea with Rev Barry ~ Episode 1 ~ The Answer Is Within You What if genuine spiritual teaching isn't meant to make you more dependent on a teacher, a technique, or someone else's answers—but instead helps you discover the wisdom and awareness that already exist within you? In this first episode of Tea with Rev Barry, Rev. Dr. Barry King explores an idea that has been central to his work for many years: the purpose of spiritual teaching should be to empower you, not create dependency. There are countless spiritual teachers, practices, techniques and systems available to us. Many can be useful. They can help us stop, become aware, look at ourselves differently and discover new possibilities. But eventually an important question needs to be asked: Is what I'm learning helping me trust myself more—or teaching me that I continually need something or somebody outside myself? Barry explores the difference between receiving guidance and giving away our own authority. A good teacher can point toward a door, offer another perspective, ask a question or help us recognize something we haven't yet seen. But ultimately, we have to walk through the door ourselves. Spiritual growth isn't about collecting more and more techniques or finding somebody who will always tell us what to do. It's about developing greater awareness of ourselves, our relationship with Spirit and the wisdom we already carry within us. That doesn't mean we never need help. We all need teachers, friends, counsellors, mentors and people who can walk beside us at different times in our lives. There is tremendous value in learning from one another. But perhaps the best teachers don't want us to remain dependent upon them. They want us to grow. They want us to question. They want us to explore. And eventually they want us to discover: “I can trust myself. I can listen within. I can become aware. I can find my own way.” Because you are not separate from Spirit. You are Spirit first. And perhaps much of the spiritual journey isn't about finding something that is missing. Perhaps it's about remembering what has always been there.
